Foundation Mission

New York Women in Communications Foundation, the philanthropic arm of New York Women in Communications, Inc., cultivates leaders in our field by providing financial support, opportunities for professional development and mentoring, and entrée to a diverse community of communications professionals. We are the largest foundation for women’s communications scholarships in the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut-Pennsylvania region.

Who We Are and What We Do

NYWICI began giving a small number of scholarships in the mid-1980s. As tuition costs rose and companies reduced on-the-job training, members of the NYWICI board realized they could fill an important role by providing tuition support and educational programs for young women planning to pursue a career in a communications field. Those who were executives in communications firms or departments also recognized that recruiting and retaining the best talent is crucial and that the opportunity to interact with a diverse group of prospective employees would benefit their companies.

In 2000, to broaden its base of strength in providing scholarships, the NYWICI organization established the New York Women in Communications Foundation.  The Foundation’s purpose is to support women who are just entering or are transitioning to the profession by offering two indispensable types of encouragement:

  • Providing scholarships for students who demonstrate the desire and talent to become future leaders in their chosen communications fields;
  • Offering educational activities and career opportunities to help women embarking on careers in communications acquire the skills that will enable them to succeed and advance.

The New York Women in Communication Foundation Scholarship Awards, which range in amount from $2,500 to $10,000, are given annually to young women to support college or graduate studies.  Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence, need, and a demonstrated interest and involvement in communications.  In addition to their very practical financial benefit, these scholarship awards from seasoned communications professionals also represent a highly meaningful imprimatur at the start of a career. Learn about the NYWICI Foundation Scholarship Program.

Since its establishment in 2000, the Foundation has expanded its offerings considerably in terms of both the number and value of the scholarships given and the educational programs presented. In 2009, we awarded 17 scholarships totaling $95,000 to 22 women.  To date, the Foundation has awarded approximately $763,000 in scholarships to 141 women.
