SPOTLIGHT: JULIA CORBETT

Senior Editor, Accenture Interactive

Julia Corbett serves as co-Vice President, Young Professionals, on the board of New York Women in Communications and is a Senior Editor at Accenture Interactive. She leads editorial strategy and content development for her clients.

She was previously in account management at Meredith Xcelerated Marketing, which was acquired by Accenture. She started her career in integrated marketing within Meredith Corporation’s Parents Network which includes leading titles Parents and Parents Latina.

Julia is a 2013 Scholarship Recipient and holds a B.A. in journalism and minor in marketing from The College of New Jersey. While in college, she interned in digital marketing at Meredith Corporation and in Seventeen’s editorial and marketing departments.

Why she does what she does…
“I love to create content. I enjoy every part of the process, from writing to interviewing experts to collaborating with designers on a piece. I also really enjoy developing a content strategy and editorial roadmap for my clients. When I was on the account side, I always had a feeling that I belonged in more of a creative role. I was fortunate to make a pivot and I haven’t looked back!”

Why she’s drawn to NYWICI…
“I always say that my career would look much different if it were not for NYWICI. I love the organization because of the incredible access, opportunities, and amazing support network. NYWICI gives you the foundation to truly transform your career.

I joined as a student at the end of 2012 right after I attended the Student Communications Career Conference for the first time. I didn’t know anybody in the industry besides my professors. My friend received one of the scholarships and I applied the following year and received the Meredith Scholarship. I’ve been actively involved ever since.”

Why she joined the Young Professionals committee — and why other members should get involved too…
“I joined the Young Professionals Committee right after graduating. Like many of our committee members, I wanted to meet other young women in the industry. I really liked the events. The happy hours were intimate and the speakers were relatable. I’m actually going on six years with the committee.

We are always evolving our programming and love when new ideas are brought to the table. We have expanded to new event formats and different kinds of speakers over the last year alone. We held a popular event in May on side hustles and entrepreneurship and run an annual financial workshop, plus informal happy hours and committee-only events.

As a committee member, you can be involved as much or as little as you want. We have a subcommittee structure in place so anyone can help plan events. Members can also write for the NYWICI site, do live social coverage at events, and many more volunteer opportunities.”

Her favorite social media platform…
“Instagram. It’s fun and the ultimate source for inspiration. Beyond that, a large focus of my job is on technology for retailers, so when Shopping on Instagram rolled out, that was really exciting. Instagram is now a one-stop-shop from discovery to purchase.”

Communications’ biggest challenge…
“Finding the right way to use new technologies (i.e., AI, AR, etc.) and breaking through the messaging clutter. As a consumer, I often unsubscribe from communications if there is overload. Whether you’re a brand or a media company, you need to constantly ask, What is the value of my content? How does it help my audience? What will make my audience come back for more?”

Off the clock, really…
“I enjoy yoga, reading, painting, and trying new restaurants and dessert spots (thanks to Instagram!). I also love going to wineries and learning about wine.”

Her nirvana…
“Paris, Sonoma, and for a day trip, Sparkling Pointe on the North Fork of Long Island.”

Did you know…
“I have a Level 1 Award in Wines from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust.”

Day to relive…
“New Year’s Eve in Munich. Before midnight, we went to the rooftop of our hotel. Once it was 12 AM, fireworks went off everywhere. For probably 10 minutes, everywhere you turned, there were big, colorful fireworks in the sky. It was magical.”

Words to live by…
“What we bring to the table today is training for the future.”
