| As I step into my role as President of New York Women in Communications, one of my goals is to ensure that NYWICI shows up for you not just at our marquee events, but every month—in practical, meaningful ways.
This column is designed to do exactly that. Each month, I’ll offer a simple prompt and an intentional challenge—small actions that can create powerful ripple effects over time. Whether you’re just starting out, navigating a pivot, or leading at the highest levels, these moments of reflection and action are meant to help you sharpen your skills, expand your network, and advocate for yourself and others.
Consider this your invitation to take one small step each month—and trust that it can lead to something much bigger.
How It Works
Each month includes:
- Why it matters
- A reflective prompt
- A practical challenge
- The ripple effect—how this small step can impact your career
You can do this quietly on your own, or share your experience with the NYWICI community along the way.
January – Reset Your Narrative
Why it matters: The way you tell your story determines how others see your potential.
Prompt: What story am I telling about my career—and is it still accurate?
Challenge: Rewrite your professional bio in three versions: one sentence, 50 words, and 150 words.
Ripple Effect: Clear, confident positioning opens doors to new opportunities.
February – Say Yes (Strategically)
Why it matters: Growth rarely happens inside our comfort zones.
Prompt: When was the last time I said yes to something that scared me?
Challenge: Say yes to one invitation, introduction, or opportunity you’d normally decline.
Ripple Effect: Proximity leads to possibility.
March – Find Your People
Why it matters: Careers are built through relationships, not transactions.
Prompt: Who do I admire—and why haven’t I reached out?
Challenge: Send three thoughtful outreach notes with no agenda other than connection.
Ripple Effect: Meaningful relationships create momentum.
April – Learn Something Uncomfortable
Why it matters: New skills build confidence and future-proof your career.
Prompt: What skill would help me feel more confident in rooms where I currently feel unsure?
Challenge: Enroll in or explore one new skill—improv, public speaking, AI tools, negotiation, or financial literacy.
Ripple Effect: Confidence follows competence.
May – Ask for the Thing
Why it matters: Advocacy is a leadership skill.
Prompt: What am I overdue in asking for?
Challenge: Make one clear ask—whether it’s for visibility, a stretch assignment, mentorship, or compensation.
Ripple Effect: When you ask, you give others the chance to say yes.
June – Edit Your Life
Why it matters: Focus is one of the most valuable professional assets.
Prompt: What’s draining my energy without delivering value?
Challenge: Eliminate, pause, or delegate one recurring obligation.
Ripple Effect: Space creates clarity.
July – Become the Connector
Why it matters: Leadership is about lifting others.
Prompt: How can I be useful to someone else right now?
Challenge: Make two meaningful introductions that could help others move forward.
Ripple Effect: Generosity strengthens networks.
August – Sharpen Your Point of View
Why it matters: Your perspective is part of your professional power.
Prompt: What do I believe that others may be thinking—but not saying?
Challenge: Share one short point-of-view post internally or publicly.
Ripple Effect: Clarity builds credibility.
September – Raise Your Hand
Why it matters: Visibility often precedes opportunity.
Prompt: Where am I qualified—but quiet?
Challenge: Volunteer for one visible role, panel, presentation, or leadership opportunity.
Ripple Effect: Confidence grows through action.
October – Future-Proof Yourself
Why it matters: Careers evolve—and preparation matters.
Prompt: If my role changed tomorrow, what skills or assets would carry me forward?
Challenge: Build or refine one portable asset—your personal brand, a certification, or a speaking topic.
Ripple Effect: Careers today are portfolios, not ladders.
November – Gratitude as Strategy
Why it matters: Relationships thrive on appreciation.
Prompt: Who helped me get here that I never fully thanked?
Challenge: Write three thoughtful thank-you notes.
Ripple Effect: Gratitude deepens professional bonds.
December – Reflect & Reclaim
Why it matters: Reflection builds resilience.
Prompt: What did I survive, learn, and accomplish this year?
Challenge: Write your personal Year in Wins—big and small.
Ripple Effect: Recognizing progress fuels confidence for what’s next.
As we move through the year together, my hope is that these small monthly challenges help you feel more confident, connected, and empowered. That is the Butterfly Effect in action—and it’s at the heart of NYWICI. |
