A Year of Hope and Accomplishment
Hi all,
A few weeks ago, Wicked premiered and broke major records. Earlier this year, we honored the original Glinda, the incredibly talented Kristin Chenoweth. During her remarks on stage, Kristin spoke about the world we live in right now and how often it feels we are more divided, but the importance of overcoming this division with love and kindness. She then graced us with the Nat King Cole song “Smile.” It was a moving and powerful moment that brought tears to many of our eyes and goosebumps too. Kristin used her time on stage to underscore the importance of love and hope… and looking for the light in the dark.
In my November note, I wrote about how change is on the horizon, and depending on your perspective – it’ll either lead to your own fulfillment and sense of renewed purpose or disappointment. I encourage us all to stay united, continue to come together to have meaningful conversations, listen and have hope.
One thing that gives me hope is when I look to the future. During my NYWICI Presidency, I haven’t been very vocal about the incredible challenge of being a working mother or a caregiver in today’s world. In addition to my roles at Forbes and NYWICI, I’m the mother to a 1-year-old and 3-year-old – two sweet little boys who keep my husband and I on our toes. As some might say, we’re in the thick of it, but our kids also keep me grounded and give me hope! There are some days when it’s incredibly difficult to balance all that life throws at you and focus on priorities. The never-ending lists and appointments, putting others’ needs before your own, taking the time to be patient, the constant information (and advice) overload, and trying to be the best I can be at everything. There are some days when I want to freeze time – and then there are days when I want to fast-forward through the more exhausting moments. It can be draining, but caring for others also gives me greater purpose and hope for our future.
I think it’s important for women to talk openly and honestly about the things that challenge them the most in life and in work, and oftentimes, balance comes up to the top of many of our lists. The more that workplaces and communities can support women – giving them flexibility, providing childcare benefits, supporting their needs, empowering them and giving them opportunities – the better off we’ll be as a society.
As we enter December, this is my last official message as President of NYWICI. Before I pass the torch to the incredible Brandi Boatner, NYWICI’s President for 2025, I want to share a few highlights of the things I’m proud that we’ve accomplished in 2024.
This year:
- We saw a 300% increase in our “Rising Star” membership, which is free for young women between the ages of 18-26.
- We gave $60,000 in scholarships to 11 deserving scholars
- We hosted 14 events that attracted more than 1,300 attendees, and 6 out of our 8 in-person events were sold-out!
- We added 3 founding College/ University members – including LIM College, NYU and Stony Brook University
- Our podcast produced 17 episodes featuring many amazing guests and conversations- ensuring different voices and perspectives were heard
- We not only reached, but exceeded our financial goals (selling out of sponsorships for Trailblazers and 95% to goal for Matrix)
All of this has me feeling very hopeful for 2025!
Finally, I want to wish everyone Happy Holidays and I hope to see many of you in 2025 at
a NYWICI event!
Best,
Laura Brusca
2024 NYWICI President
