Galentine’s Day

In a world overflowing with female empowerment in the wake of the Barbie movie, showing a little appreciation for your fellow women should come as seamlessly as breathing. Despite this, we see time and time again women’s accomplishments being overlooked, and progress being ignored. In America Ferrera’s (as Gloria in Barbie) famous monologue on being a woman she says, “You have to never get old, never be rude, never show off, never be selfish, never fall down, never fail, never show fear, never get out of line. It’s too contradictory and nobody gives you a medal or says thank you!” Setting aside a day filled with love for your female friends is therefore increasingly important. It’s the perfect opportunity to go into detail about what you appreciate most about one another.

Galentine’s Day

Galentine’s Day dates to a season two episode of Parks & Recreation in which the main character, Leslie Knope, coins February 13th a holiday to celebrate the influential women in her life. It’s “the best day of the year,” according to Knope.

Since its airing, the day has rooted itself in the hearts of women as a wonderful opportunity to lean into the gratitude they feel for their favorite women.

The beauty of Galentine’s Day over its highly recognized competitor the following day is Galentine’s Day can be celebrated regardless of relationship status. Gather your friends, share some kind words, and prepare for a Galentine’s Day you’ll never forget.

Choose your favorite way to celebrate

Arguably the best part about Galentine’s Day is its personal nature and adaptability. Whether you and your girls enjoy hiking, a night on the town, or a cozy movie night in, Galentine’s Day is all about celebrating these seemingly small moments with those whothat never fail to lift your spirits. And if you’re in need of a little inspiration, feel free to watch season two, episode 16 of Parks & Recreation to see how Leslie and her friends choose to celebrate the day!

Appreciate the women in your life, today and everyday

There is a concept known as a glimmer, or micro moments in life that bring peace, positivity, and joy. Finding these glimmers in the women around you (and verbalizing them on Galentine’s Day) will not only benefit your personal well-being while allowing you to feel gratitude but will also offer the opportunity to express this appreciation to those you love. In the words of Jane Fonda on female friendship, “I exist because I have my women friends. They make me stronger; they make me smarter; they make me braver.” Don’t forget to remind the women in your life that you are you because of the love, friendship, and support they provide.
