Navigating Workplace Challenges: Practical Tips for Confidence & Resilience

On December 2, NYWICI’s professional development series Next Level You held the Navigating Workplace Challenges: Practical Tips for Confidence & Resilience event.

The webinar was moderated by influential NYWICI member and senior digital content executive Meaghan O’Rourke and featured influential guest speaker and professional coach Phyllis Erlich. The interactive session provided guests to ask questions regarding challenges they faced in their careers.

As president of a company focused on leadership development, Erlich shared her insights from her yearlong experience in the field of communication.

A negative workplace can greatly impact a person’s view of their profession and their job obligations. Erlich expressed that’s why it’s important to create a safety net around you and strategize with other colleagues to see if there’s a general consensus and possible solutions to help resolve the issue.

It’s helpful to identify elements and patterns in the workplace and assess if challenges are a result of company culture or isolated incidents.

Erlich remarked setting boundaries could mitigate issues faced in the workplace. If issues still persist, informing HR and management of problems are routes in which employees can help bring attention to problems they’re facing.

Changing career paths is never an easy decision. That’s why it’s especially important to see if the decision to switch professions is a result of overall negative company culture or isolated incidents.

Erlich stressed the significance of interpersonal communication in the workplace. She emphasized how developing an effective communication style with your boss had the power to create good working relationships. Being proactive and mindful of communication elements like setting, timing and approach could boost morale and productivity in the workplace.

Respect and teamwork are integral to positive company culture. Erlich found in her years of working in the corporate world bottom-up collaboration and communication made a company stronger and more welcoming.

Embracing change and being willing to take on different approaches and open to new solutions helped Erlich navigate frequent changes in her career. Erlich remarked being a “student of the world” helped her especially when navigating uncertainty and unrest in the workplace.

Having a strong sense of self-awareness and leaning into natural strengths helped Erlich maximize her career potential. It’s important to build strong relationships within the workplace, but it is also key to be resilient and understand obstacles are a part of the journey.
